Community Gathers to Honour Tristan Taylor with Memorial Football Match and Mental Health Initiative
Higham, May 2024 – A year after the tragic loss of 15-year-old Tristan Taylor, the Higham recreational ground became a beacon of unity and remembrance as the community came together to celebrate his memory. Over 200 attendees enjoyed a heartfelt afternoon in the sun, watching a commemorative football match between Eagles Men and Tristan’s Tigers, a team comprising Tristan’s friends’ dads and football coaches.
In a poignant ceremony, Deputy Mayor of Gravesham, Jenny Wallace, unveiled “Tristan’s Talking Bench,” a dedicated space for young people to sit and discuss their mental health openly. The bench, symbolizing support and connection, aims to encourage conversations around mental well-being.
The event was also attended by Kerry Holmes and Arshan Gulati from Gravesend, both of whom have tragically lost their sons to suicide. Their presence highlighted the importance of community support in times of grief.
Representatives from Papyrus, Samaritans, and the Elliott Holmes Memorial Fund were present, providing resources and support to attendees. Tristan’s mother, Gemma Cayley-Smith, addressed the gathering, urging Tristan’s friends to speak up and seek help when needed. Contact details for mental health support services are displayed prominently on the plaque at Tristan’s Talking Bench, ensuring that assistance is readily available to those in need. £1,274 was raised on the day.
