After 28 years serving the local community, Meopham Leisure centre is under threat to close unless funds can be raised in the next few days – Swale Academies Trust, as the situation stands, is not renewing their lease. With more housing being planned for the area and therefore an increase in population, this does not sit well for the mental health and wellbeing of the local community.
The Elliott Holmes Memorial Fund is already funding counselling for young people from the Meopham area and the closure will impact on these numbers. Exercise, which is good for mental health isn’t the only thing that will go. This is a place for people of all ages to mix and interact with others on a regular basis. We can only hope the bigger picture will be taken into consideration by all parties and a solution is found.
Over 200 people of all ages turned out this evening to show their support for the centre.
